If you are storing a vehicle for four weeks
or more, consider the following:
Insurance
– You may be eligible for a reduced premium. Contact
your auto insurance company to make sure you take advantage
of discounts and have proper coverage.
Mechanical
- Have your vehicle serviced.
- Ensure all fluids are fresh and at proper
levels.
o Change the oil and the filter
o Water for the battery
o Antifreeze
o Engine coolant
o Washer fluid if freezing temperatures
are anticipated
- Disconnect the battery. Keep in mind
that alarm systems become inoperative.
- Check the tire pressure to compensate
for extreme cold or hot climates. Correct tire pressure
before you go back on the road.
- Fill the fuel tank. If storage will
exceed two months, add a fuel stabilizer to prevent fuel
from breaking down.
Interior
- Protect upholstery by applying a dealer-recommended preservative
to prevent interior cracking.
Exterior -
- Plug the exhaust pipe with steel wool
and place mothballs in the trunk, interior and under the
hood to deter rodents and other small animals.
- Cover the vehicle with a breathable, anchored
cloth car cover. Plastic covers can trap condensation which
can rust.
- Protect the paint by washing and waxing
the vehicle.
- Photograph or videotape the condition
of the vehicle, externally and internally.
